A Java application is a classic desktop program, which is locally running on the target machine. The database can be located on the same machine (FAT-Client) or be existent at a server (Client-Server application). Applications generated by XDEV 5 are automatically executable on systems running on Windows, Linux, UNIX as well as MAC OS-X. An executable EXE file can be generated for Windows systems optionally. Java applications always need an installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which can be added to your application during deployment. If you know that the target environment already has a JRE installed, you can ship your application with a JRE attached.
Java Webstart applications are the least known forms of Java programs. Webstart applications are provided as a download by a website and is being installed on the target machine at first time start. Afterwards, the application can both be started by calling the respective website or launching the application via the downloaded JNLP file. On each start, new updates are downloaded automatically, keeping the application up-to- date without a separate update procedure. Even user's rights can be verified on startup, thus making Java Webstart Technologie very suitable for SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions.
Any application developed with XDEV 5 can be executed on Windows 8 Pro Tablets and Windows 10 mobile devices.
XDEV 5 automatically installs a local testing environment, so that your project can also be tested as Rich Internet Applications (Java Applet) with a simple click.
XDEV 5 offers a fully automatized deployment based on Apache ANT, which allows you to create new builds in no time, without having to know the script language.
Applet

Java Applets

(deprecated)

Java Applets are Java programs, which are invoked via internet and run inside your web browser. The advantage of an Applet compared to Ajax applications is, that Applets are not executed by the browser but by the installed JRE, thus being browser independent and not being affected by browser updates.
XDEV 5 offers a fully automatized deployment based on Apache ANT, which allows you to create new builds in no time, without having to know the script language. XDEV 4 lets you decide about the deployment method only at the end of your project, because the XDEV 5 deployment wizard can create applications running on Desktop-PCs, MACs, on tablets witih Windows 8 Pro and inside your web browser, thus being very versatile.
Note: In the upcoming Java Version 9, expected in spring 2017, the Java browser plugin will be removed from the Java Developer Kit by Oracle. Without the Java plugin it won´t be possible tu execute Java appelts any longer. Java Applets can be shifted to a Java Webstart application. With XDEV RapidClipse you can develop HTML5 web-applications and mobile apps.
